The Maryland state prosecutor is going ahead with an investigation of whether Linda Tripp broke the law by secretly taping telephone conversations with Monica Lewinsky, The (Baltimore) Sun reported Thursday.

Stephen Montanarelli had been expected to make the decision after Whitewater special prosecutor Kenneth Starr finished his inquiry into the Lewinsky matter. But he will begin his inquiry now because he is frustrated by the slow pace of Starr's probe, the newspaper said, quoting Tripp's attorneys.

Joseph Murtha and Anthony Zaccagnini, Tripp's Baltimore lawyers, met with Montanarelli last week in an effort to persuade him not to investigate the Columbia, Md., woman, the newspaper said.
