As former sheriff of Davis County, I am concerned about a number of critical issues at the Davis County sheriff's office. When Rob Davis ran for sheriff four years ago, he stated he could run the office in a more efficient manner because he had a degree in business management. Please note my budget for 1994 was $8,598,096. In his three-plus years as sheriff, the figures have climbed to a record $13,973,803. This is an increase of $5,375,707.
Can we, the Davis County citizens, afford four more years of these unnecessary increases? In 1991, I eliminated one of two chief deputies. As a result, this individual went to work for the state and was later terminated. Against the advice and recommendation of the majority of Davis County police and fire chiefs, and many sheriffs office employees, the sheriff rehired this individual, arbitrarily creating a position of "major" at an added cost of $73,998. The Criminal Justice Complex was built at a cost of over $20 million to the taxpayers. The jail has 368 beds. The sheriff rents beds (a common practice) to federal prisoners. Due to inefficient management and a need to create more revenue to support his budget, the jail is now overcrowded. He has one full-time deputy with his time divided between gangs and drugs. This is less manpower than when he took office, even though gang violence continues to grow. Please do not be fooled by political rhetoric. At least 90 percent of all law enforcement officers in Davis County support Bud Cox for sheriff. You can verify this by asking any police officer you know. Bud Cox is a captain at the sheriff's office. He has 23 years experience at the office and would serve the citizens of Davis County very well. Please vote June 23. That will determine who will be your sheriff for the next four years.
