A hostage situation ended peacefully Wednesday morning after a SWAT team burst into a home and arrested a man whose estranged wife told police he was holding her against her will.

A woman, 25, told police that her 25-year-old estranged husband had broken into her house, 47 Airlane Drive, in the early morning and handcuffed her and threatened to kill her with a .22-caliber rifle, said Clearfield City Attorney Lawrence Waggoner.Robert Weight, 25, apparently fell asleep and the woman managed to contact police, but she was not able to get out of the house, Waggoner said.

A SWAT team surrounded the house and blocked off the area. The woman eventually freed herself, hid the rifle and left the house, Waggoner said. SWAT team members then stormed the house about 10:40 a.m. and took the man into custody without incident.

As a precaution, police alerted staff at the nearby Hill Field Elementary School that they might have to be evacuated, but most students were on summer vacation and the evacuation was never ordered.

The woman had a protective order against the man, Waggoner said. The man was booked into the Davis County Jail on probation violation, and for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, possession of a stolen vehicle and illegal possession of a firearm.
