Commander Robert Franklin Jones passed away May 31, 1998 at the VA Hospital of complications following pneumonia.

He was born May 7, 1913 to Elva Eudora Lambert and Robert William Jones in Kamas, Utah. He was married December 31, 1935 to Ruth Russell in the Salt Lake Temple. She passed away on September 15, 1985. He later married Fern Bertha Munn on March 3, 1987 in the Salt Lake Temple.Bob graduated from Granite High School and joined the Navy, January 17, 1935 and served a long and illustrious career of 30 years that spanned three wars. He served on the U.S.S. Mississippi, the U.S.S. Nevada, the U.S.S. Coral Sea, the U.S.S. North Hampton, and the U.S.S. Enterprise. While serving on the U.S.S. Nevada, he suffered injuries due to a Kamikaze attack. In the attack, he saw 13 of his fellow sailors killed around him. Commander Jones took part in many battles including Iwo Jima and D-Day, where the U.S.S. Nevada had a key role in the Utah Beach operation.

In 1959, Commander Jones was assigned as Naval advisor to the Republic of Korea Navy at Chin Hae. He also had the opportunity to serve on the U.S.S. Enterprise, the first nuclear powered carrier, as weapons and security officer when it was first commissioned.

Commander Jones retired in 1964 after 30 years of service with the rank of commander and three purple hearts. He taught NJROTC students at Kearns High School for three years, retiring in 1969. He spent the next seven years ranching in Colfax, California, where he and his family spent some of their happiest years.

Bob's health declined in the later years of his life due to injuries suffered in World War II. During this time he was nursed by his loving wife, Fern. He will be well remembered for his great sense of humor and his love of reading and his devotion to his country. He has always been an active member of the LDS Church, having served in branch presidencies, taught Gospel Doctrine classes and many other callings. He enjoyed temple work until his health declined. He was always kind and loving to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Bob is survived by his wife; sons, Robert Richard Jones (JoAnne) of Tallahassee, Florida; James Franklin Jones (Becky) of Salt Lake City; step-children include Harold Munn (Teresa) of Springville; Cheryl Ward (Dennis) of Sandy; Ethie Munn of Bakersfield, California; Gary Munn of Hurricane. He is survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers include: Marie Hynes, Pat Maudsley (Bill), John (Doris), Ruth Rowsell, Elva Crane (Don), Ray (Joyce), Clara Borg (Jack). Preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Paul and Billy.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 4, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the South Cottonwood 2nd Ward Chapel, 980 East 5600 South, Salt Lake City. Friends may call at Memorial Estates Mortuary at 5850 South 900 East in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, June 3 from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Thursday. Interment will be at the Memorial Estates Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South, Salt Lake City.
