The leaders of Jerusalem's main churches are to hold an unprecedented ecumenical celebration in Bethlehem on December 4, 1999, to celebrate the new millennium.

After an ecumenical service in Manger Square, Bethlehem, the church leaders - including Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant - will together enter the Church of the Nativity, which marks the spot where Jesus is said to have been born. Bishop Munib Younan, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan, whose church includes Israel, Palestine and Jerusalem, told ENI that this would be the first time the church leaders had jointly entered the Bethlehem church.
