A fire in a West Salt Lake apartment complex forced residents in two units from their homes Saturday.

Firefighters put out the flames quickly, but not before it destroyed a room and broke a water pipe. The pipe sprayed water into the apartment below, flooding it, Salt Lake Fire Capt. Devin Villa said."It took them a while to find the turn-off switch (for the water pipe)," he added.

The blaze and the flood caused $50,000 in damage to the complex, 1594 W. Secret Garden Place (1635 South).

The fire started about 12:50 p.m. and burned a bedroom. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, he said.

Firefighters spent about three hours pumping four inches of water out and moving drenched furniture from the flooded apartment, Villa said.
