Two men were in custody following a business robbery and chase in which an officer wrestled a gun from one of the men Friday night.

Salt Lake City Police Lt. Arthur Healey said a man in his late 40s entered a Subway restaurant, 1314 S. Foothill, around 6:40 p.m. and told a clerk he had a gun and to hand over the money in the register. After the clerk complied, the man fled the store and jumped into the passenger side of a truck waiting outside, Healey said. The truck fled westbound on 1300 South.

Officer Shaun Wihongi saw the truck pass and chased it in his patrol car, Healey said. Both the robbery suspect and Wihongi left their vehicles at 1100 West and Freemont Avenue (about 1100 South), and a foot chase ensued.

The man turned and drew a revolver on Wihongi, who tackled him. The man had the gun pointed at Wihongi's stomach before Wihongi was able to wrestle it away.

Both Wihongi and the man were treated for minor injuries at an area hospital. The man was later booked into Salt Lake County Jail.

Wihongi credited neighbors in the area for helping him make a safe arrest of the suspect.

Meanwhile, 20 officers, a helicopter and several K9s conducted a search for the driver of the truck.

A man was found hiding under a camper shell in the backyard of a home in West Salt Lake around 8:30 p.m. and taken into custody for investigation in connection with the robbery.
