Children have fun playing in the unusual above-ground roots of a wisteria vine that attracts hundreds of children each year to its location in Capitol Reef National Park. The vine was planted by early Mormon pioneers when they settled the town of Fruita in what is now the national park. For some gardeners, mere mention of wisteria sends many running for their pruning shears, eager to rid themselves of what some call an evasive nuisance, but others can't resist growing it because of its beautiful clusters of fragrant flowers. Different varieties are grown throughout Asia, Europe and the United States.
