AIDS is the leading cause of death among people 25 to 44 in the United States. Testing is important to control the spread of the HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
For people who have not gotten tested because of the cost, the Salt Lake City-County Health Department is sponsoring free and confidential testing in four locations on Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27. The tests are normally $15 and are being offered free as part of National HIV Testing Day.Reliable test results are available in seven to 10 working days. In 1997, two free testing days were offered in June and December, during which 585 people were test; six were identified as infected with HIV and referred for treatment.
No appointment is needed for the tests.
Tests will be conducted Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Public Health Center, 610 S. 200 East, Salt Lake City; or Ellis R. Shipp Public Health Center, 4535 S. 5600 West, West Valley City.
