YANK RELIEVER ON IL: Reliever Jeff Nelson, who leads New York Yankees pitchers with 36 appearances this season, was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of back trouble.

The Yankees made the move before beginning their interleague series against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Reliever Mike Buddie, who pitched briefly for the Yankees this season, was recalled from Triple-A Columbus.CUBS RECALL THIRD BASEMAN: The Chicago Cubs recalled third baseman Kevin Orie from their AAA Iowa farm team Friday.

Orie was expected to be in uniform for Friday night's game against the Kansas City Royals.

Orie started the season with Chicago but was sent to Iowa on May 27 after hitting just .181 in 43 games. Also Friday, the Cubs placed outfielder Brant Brown on the 15-day disabled list.

HONORARY CAPTAINS: Vera Clemente, widow of Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, and longtime baseball executive Lee MacPhail will serve as honorary captains at next month's All-Star game.

Clemente, the executive director of the Roberto Clemente Sports City in Puerto Rico, captains the National League All-Stars, while MacPhail will represent the American League in the July 7 game at Coors Field in Denver, major league baseball announced Friday.

MacPhail, who worked for the New York Yankess, Baltimore Orioles and served as AL president from 1974-84, will be inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame July 26.
