An Avenues man will spend up to five years in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy.
Third District Judge William A. Thorne sentenced Kenny Vieregge, 41, to an indeterminate term of up to five years at the Utah State Prison after Vieregge pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted forcible sodomy. Vieregge had originally been charged with forcible sodomy, a first-degree felony.Thorne said he would write the parole board recommending that Vieregge serve the full five-year term during a sentencing hearing last week.
The charges stemmed from a Dec. 19 incident where Vieregge drove a group of boys up a canyon, according to charging documents. A 14-year-old boy told police he fell asleep in the back of the car, and when he woke up Vieregge was performing a sex act on him.
Vieregge was arrested Jan. 29 by West Valley police after a Neighborhood Watch member reported seeing him hanging around Harvey Street (3375 West). Vieregge had been arrested the day before on another charge, posted bail and was released, police said.
Vieregge had been out of prison only 41 days after serving time for his 1982 child-sodomy conviction.
