Downtown Salt Lake City will take on a cosmopolitan air with the beginning of the Lively Arts Summer Series at the Gallivan Plaza.
Sponsored by Global Artways, the Gallivan Plaza, Utah Opera Company, the Utah Film and Video Center and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the series will begin Monday, July 6, and run through the middle of August. All events are free to the public.On Mondays starting at noon, July 6, the Utah Opera Company will provide an insider's view of live opera. "Operamania!" will present glimpses of "Carmen," "The Magic Flute" and "Porgy and Bess."
On Tuesday evenings beginning July 7 at 7 p.m., cream-of-the-crop films created by local and national filmmakers will be screened, with selected winning films from the Utah Short Film and Video Festival.
Movie fans will be treated to documentary, narrative and experimental films. A short introduction by local filmmaker and instructor Sam Dunn will open each presentation on Wednesdays, beginning July 8 at noon. The first films will be "Destiny," "Chekhov's Gun" and "Melvin's Last Baptism."
The treasures of Salt Lake visual arts will be on display at Gallivan Plaza for the next six weeks, thanks to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.
