A woman was seriously injured and her two daughters critically injured when a sports utility vehicle slammed into the side of their car Saturday night.
The woman, 35, was in serious condition at Pioneer Valley Hospital Saturday night. Paramedics airlifted her 9-year-old daughter to Primary Children's Medical Center and her 14-year-old daughter to University Hospital. Both remained in critical condition Saturday night.Deputies didn't release the names of the victims pending notification of their family.
Witnesses told investigators the driver of the sports utility vehicle tried to beat a yellow light, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Leslee Collins said. However, the vehicle entered the intersection, 2200 West and 4700 South, on a red light about 7 p.m, Collins said.
The car, heading north on 2200 West, was struck by the sports utility vehicle, which was heading east on 4700 South, on the driver's side.
"I'm surprised there weren't more injuries with how badly the car was hit," Collins said.
The 20-year-old driver of the sports utility vehicle, who was riding alone, suffered minor injuries and was in good condition Saturday night.
