Joe Straley, dashing aviator, returned from England after World War II and bought a beautiful house for his young bride, the former Lila Johnson, in Salt Lake City. They filled their home with children, seven in all, one born on each day of the week: Bonnie, John, Jim, Joe, Barbara, Jerry and Jeff.

Then he made another of Lila's dreams come true by being sealed to her and their children in the Salt Lake Temple. Joe's warm smile, quick wit and friendly handshake always served him well and helped him faithfully fulfill many church callings.Joe worked for United Airlines 34 years.

Though he had severe pancreatic cancer, he appeared his unusual "immortal" self until just recently, enduring almost without a complaint. A regular at Bill and Nada's, Joe was a finalist every weekday evening on "Jeopardy," and "Wheel of Fortune." Lots of bowling trophies, lots of lost golf balls, but best of all, lots of great, great memories.

Survived by sisters, Mildred, Bessie, Emily, and Dorothy; wife; children; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his brother, George; parents, Julianna and Theodore; grandson, M.J. Straley III.

A viewing is scheduled Wednesday evening starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple. A funeral will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. at the Douglas Ward, 721 S. 1200 East, with a viewing at 9:45 a.m.
