Q: Where did the waving fo balloons under the opponent's basket come from? Does it do any good?

A: Basketball teams wanted to keep fans involved in the game, so they handed out promotional items like towels, signs, noice makers and, of course, balloons. No one's sure who, started the balloon waving, but Jazz fans were among the first. (Jazz officials used to hand out colored cards for the audiance to wave). Balloons are now the preferred itam of distraction for both the Jazz (they're cheap) and the fans (eash to wave and highly visable). Players say the balloons don't affect whether they make their free throws, but it does keep fans involved; and that's the whole purpose.
