A metal rod crashed through the windshield of a minivan, impaled the body of a teenage girl and lodged in the back of her seat.

The 16-year-old girl, sitting in the front seat Thursday while her father was driving on I-95, was removed from the minivan with the 28-inch bar still inside her.The girl, who was conscious when she arrived at the hospital, suffered a perforated lung but is expected to recover. She was in critical condition.

"We used the tools we had for rescue, we cut the rod, pulled her away from the seat, put her in a stretcher and she went into the E.R.,' said Alex Halverson of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

Authorities said the rod apparently was kicked up by another vehicle and thrown into the minivan's windshield.
