Fifty years ago, Earl Shaffer went into the record books as the first person to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail.
For his next challenge, he's doing it again.Shaffer, now 79, began his second 2,158-mile trip on May 2 in Springer Mountain, Ga. He plans to be in Maine in four months.
He set off with a 40-pound Army surplus rucksack. No tent or stove.
"I just like to sleep on a mountaintop," Shaffer said Thursday.
