Vice President Al Gore and wife Tipper led off a charity run for breast cancer research Saturday but finished squarely in the middle of the pack three miles later.
"I didn't know we were only supposed to go around once," Gore joked after the National Race for the Cure in downtown Washington. The race drew a record 51,000 participants, including more than 3,000 women who have survived the disease, organizers said.Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and FBI Director Louis Freeh also participated, helping to raise an estimated $1.8 million for research, education and cancer screening.
"We're here for the sixth straight year because we feel deeply about the need to continue the momentum toward finding a cure for this disease," Gore said afterward.
