Joe Edward Whitesides, 84, died June 8, 1998 in Bountiful, Utah.

He was born October 11, 1913 in Layton, Utah to Mary Alice and William Wilford Whitesides, the seventh of 10 children. Joe attended Davis High School and graduated from Utah State University in 1936, where he was named All Conference End in football. He coached at Bear River High School, then began a coaching career at Utah State University from 1937 to 1953, which included positions of Assistant Coach, Head Basketball Coach, Director of Athletics and Dean of Students.Joe was an officer in the Utah National Guard and served in the Pacific during World War II as Lt. Col. and Commander of the 213th Field Artillery Battalion. He served in the National Guard and Korean War as Lt. Col. and Commanding Officer of the 204th Field Artillery Battalion. From 1953 to 1967, he was a colonel in the National Guard, serving as Property and Fiscal Officer for the State of Utah.

Joe served on the Alumni Council at USU as Member, President (61-63) and Past President. He was inducted into the Old Main Society in 1998. He represented District 12 in the Utah State Legislature from 1974 to 1982, as a member of the Public Education, Appropriation and Rules Committees and was Chairman of the Rules Committee.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joe held several teaching and administrative positions including serving as a member of the Logan 15th Ward bishopric, Bishop of Parleys 3rd Ward in Salt Lake City, and member of the Parleys Stake presidency. He served as President of the Pacific Northwest Mission in Seattle (67-71), and as Director of the Missionary Training Center in Salt Lake City (71-72). He was also a sealer in both the Salt Lake and Bountiful Temples (74-98).

Joe married Lazelle Ewing, of Smithfield, Utah in 1934, solemnized in the Logan Temple. She died in 1982. They had a son, Kim and daughter, Jill. He married Elma Cheney in 1984 in the Jordan River Temple.

Joe is survived by his widow, Elma; children, Kim Whitesides, Salt Lake City, UT; Jill Whitesides, Indianapolis, IN; Melody Starmer, Castro Valley, CA; Lana Foley, Las Vegas, NV; Colleen Tibbetts, Tracy, CA; sisters, Ethel Adams, Kaysville, UT; Alice Johnson, Layton, UT; nine grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife, Lazelle; sister, Mary; and brothers, Carl; Wilford; Ferris; Zulon; Maine; and William.

Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, at the Mueller Park 5th Ward at 1320 East 1975 South in Bountiful, Utah. There will be a viewing from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 10 at Lindquist Mortuary, 727 North 400 East in Bountiful, UT and from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to service. Interment will be at the Kaysville City Cemetery, Kaysville, UT.
