Dozens of people are feared dead after fire swept a crowded movie theater and shopping center in Palembang on the island of Sumatra, police said Tuesday.

The fire broke out Monday night in the Megahira shopping center while hundreds of people were inside watching a movie. Dozens more were lined up to buy tickets.Police said the exact number of victims was not known. The fire was still smoldering this morning, hampering rescue efforts in the city 285 miles northwest of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

Nineteen bodies were found after a search of a small area of the burned building, police said.

Police spokesman Lt. Col. Sardjo Sadjat said 19 people were injured, 14 of them hospitalized. "Dozens are believed trapped," he said.
