And you thought light rail wasn't here yet.
Utah Transit Authority light rail vehicles have begun riding the rails - and stopping traffic at least twice a day between 6400 South and 7200 South. For the next 18 months or so, UTA engineers will test the 23 cars the agency has purchased for its 15-mile Salt Lake City-to-Sandy main line as the vehicles arrive from a production facility in Sacramento.
UTA is asking motorists and pedestrians to be aware of the cars, especially where they cross city streets. Those intersections include 6400 South at about 300 West, 6400 South and Cottonwood Street, and 7200 South at 300 West.
The cars will cross those streets at least twice a day, Monday through Friday, for the next year-and-a-half. Crossing bells will sound and crossing arms will lower to block street traffic - except at 6400 South and Cottonwood Street, where flaggers will stop traffic before a light rail vehicle passes through.
