An Ogden man and his two dogs were airlifted off of Mount Ogden Monday after failing to return home from an all-day hiking trip Sunday.

Joe McDonald and his golden retrievers were spotted by a helicopter early Monday, Weber County sheriff's spokesman Les M. Townsend said.McDonald was reported missing at 9 p.m. Sunday by his wife, Nancy, who said he had not returned from his day hike. McDonald and the dogs took off on the Beus Canyon trail head at the top of 4600 South toward Mount Ogden at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Weber County search and rescue crews, along with U.S. Forest Service employees, began their search Monday morning.

McDonald is an experienced hiker, but his dogs suffered injuries to their paw pads and were unable to walk down the mountain, Townsend said. The trio spent the night on the mountain, he said.
