Lars Sylvester Mortensen passed away Tuesday, July 14, 1998 in Bountiful, Utah.
Born March 25, 1925 in Elmo, Emery County, Utah, the son of Nephi and Elsie Gena Oviatt Mortensen, the fourth child of nine children. He was educated in Wellington and Price, Utah. Joined the Navy in 1943 for 32 months, active in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, on the U.S.S. Hessem as Motor-mack third class.Lars married Joyce Derbyshire, October 2, 1946 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he drove taxi cab, worked at Martin Sheetmetal, American Smelting and Refining Co. and Utah Power and Light. Moved to Orem, Utah and was an operator in the Utah Power and Light Co. Moved to Helper, Utah and was a supervisor for the Utah Power and Light Co. at the Carbon Plant for 19 years. Worked at the Huntington Canyon Power Plant, 10 years and retired in 1983. They had seven children and Joyce passed away, April 5, 1992, in Helper, Utah. Lars was a devoted, faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, teaching the Seventies 12 years, High Priests Quorum seven years in Helper, Utah and an ordinance worker in the Bountiful, Utah Temple three years. He married Veldonna M. Wardell, October 5, 1994 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, residing in Bountiful, Utah since 1994.
Survived by his wife, Veldonna; five sons, David (Paula) of Provo, UT; Stanley (Vicky) of Kalispel, MT; James (Marlyn) of Idaho Falls, ID; Donald (Cindy) and Richard (Joann), both of Helper, UT; two daughters, Sheri and Karolyn of Salt Lake City, UT; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two step-children, Daniel (Kris) Griggs of Provo, UT; Julie Wilcox Feigleson (Mike) of Bountiful, UT; five step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Nephi "Junior" (Betty) Mortensen of Paris, ID; three sisters, Geniva Green Wilding of Salt Lake City, UT; Virginia Loskot of Phoenix, AZ; Nina (Robert) Lindhart of Greenriver, WY; many relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 17, 1998 at the Bountiful 38th Ward Chapel, 102 East 1400 South, where friends may call one hour prior to services.
