Sandy residents will have to live without access to a seven-block segment of 10600 South for the next two months.

City road crews were poised to close down 10600 South between State Street and 700 East at 9 a.m. Friday. The street, now a two-lane road with a center turn lane, will be widened into a four-lane road with a center lane. The project will cost about $1.6 million.

In about two months, the road will reopen to one lane of traffic in each direction, according to project manager Tom Timmerman.

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to use 9000 South, 9400 South, 11000 South or 11400 South as alternates.

"This is just part of our effort to widen the corridors going east and west in the city," said Sandy spokesman Rick Davis.
