Former FCC chairman Reed E. Hundt has been appointed to the Novell Inc. board of directors. His appointment increases Novell's board representation to seven.

"Reed Hundt brings exceptional insight and perspective to how we translate the technology of the Internet and telecommunications to the communities of business, information and society," said Eric Schmidt, Novell's CEO and chairman of the board.Hundt, 50, is a principal of Charles Ross Partners, a telecommunications business planning and policy consulting firm; co-chairman of The Forum on Communications and Society at The Aspen Institute; a member of the boards of directors of Allegiance Telecom, Ascend Communications and North-point Communications.

Hundt was chairman of the FCC from 1993 through 1997 and was instrumental in the implementation of the Telecommunications Act of 1997, which promotes competition and encourages the rapid deployment of new telecommunications technologies. He also helped negotiate the World Trade Organization Telecommunications agreement to open markets in 69 countries to competition and foreign investment.
