Utah State basketball coach Larry Eustachy, close friends with Tim Floyd, who is leaving his position at Iowa State for one with the Chicago Bulls, is said by the Des Moines Register to be one of the two top candidates to fill Floyd's job with the Cyclones.

The other top choice is Illinois State coach Kevin Stallings, according to the Register, saying those two are on the short list of Iowa State athletic director Gene Smith.Eustachy was off on a recruiting trip Wednesday and did not return phone messages.

However, on April 26, when rumors that Floyd would get the Bulls' coaching job heated up, fueling thoughts that Eustachy would be a candidate for Iowa State, Eustachy told the Deseret News, he wasn't going anywhere. "Nothing interests me now," he said then, adding that he has a reworked USU contract in hand that makes him very happy. He talked of a "new era" in USU basketball as his program matures. He says he's "quite comfortable with everything" in Cache Valley.

"Really, from the bottom of my heart," said Eustachy said in April, "I would not be interested (in Iowa State)." Asked if there were any other jobs that might intrigue him, he joked, "Maybe the Lakers."

Eustachy was consulted closely and approved of the recent hiring of Bruce Van De Velde as new Utah State athletic director.

His wife, Stacy, said the couple has not recently discussed the Iowa State job, and she didn't know what her husband's current thoughts might be. She said she spoke with him late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning and gave him his messages but didn't ask about Iowa State.
