Fire officials aren't banning fireworks during the Pioneer Day weekend, but they are discouraging residents from setting them off.
Fire danger is extremely high, said Provo Fire Chief Bill Blair. Common sense is the best defense against wildfires in and around the city. Fireworks are permitted from July 22 to July 27.Officials advise residents who choose to have home fireworks displays to never light them in the foothills or vacant lots. Tall, dry grass can easily be ignited. Fire works should only be lit on pavement or well-watered lawns.
Open fires are prohibited in the canyons at this time because of the potential hazard.
