Supporters of bilingual education have asked for an emergency injunction to block California's new law requiring "English Only" classrooms when school resumes this fall, lawyers said Friday.

In a request filed with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Thursday, lawyers representing students in bilingual education programs asked the court to stop Proposition 227, which scraps almost all bilingual education programs in the nation's most populous state."We need to prevent irreparable harm being done to these students," said Joseph Jaramillo of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund. "This is a quick move to try to block the law."
