In a match interrupted by lighting problems, complaints and a fainting fan, Monica Seles defeated Conchita Martinez on Saturday to give the United States a 1-1 tie with Spain in their Fed Cup semifinal.

After Arantxa Sanchez Vicario beat Lisa Raymond in a three-set opening match, Seles downed Martinez 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 before a boisterous crowd at Club de Campo. The best-of-5 competition will be decided Sunday with the reverse singles and the doubles. The winner will play for the Fed Cup title against defending champion France or Switzerland, which leads that semifinal 2-0.

LEGG MASON CLASSIC: At Washington, top-seed Michael Chang pulled out of his Legg Mason Tennis Classic semifinal Saturday night after reinjuring his left wrist.

Chang, the two-time Legg Mason defending champion, couldn't make his match against 14th-seed Scott Draper of Australia because tendonitis in his wrist flared up Saturday morning.

The injury ruined a potential final between Chang and second-seeded Andre Agassi, who rolled over third-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa 6-1, 6-0 on Saturday.

Agassi will be looking for a record fourth Legg Mason title when he faces Draper on Sunday in the finals of the $700,000 tournament.

MERCEDES CUP: At Stuttgart, Germany, Marcelo Rios has been chasing Pete Sampras for months. He still can't catch him.

All Rios needed to do Saturday was beat Karol Kucera to replace the American as the world's No. 1 player.

Rios failed, ending on the losing side of a 6-1, 6-7 (8-10), 6-4 score against the Slovakian in the semifinals of the Mercedes Cup.

The Chilean fought off seven match points and received a courtside injection to treat his allergies in a dramatic match as his latest bid to replace the slumping Sampras failed.
