It may be the closest Karl Malone ever gets to a golf course.
The Mailman, who disdains golf and has said a golf course is a "waste of good pastureland," is scheduled to be one of the emcees for Tuesday's Lincoln Financial Group Pro/Celebrity Skins Game at Park Meadows at 10 a.m.ESPN announcer Jim Kelly will share announcing duties with Malone for the event, which will pair celebrities with senior golfers in an alternate-shot format skins game.
Among those competing are former Cincinnati Reds stars Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan, NFL Hall of Famer Jan Stenerud, Olympic gold medal freestyle ski aerialist Nikki Stone, ex-Jazz center Mark Eaton and Los Angeles Clippers forward Isaac Austin, a close friend of Malone's.
Malone's tie to the tournament is his charity, the Karl Malone Foundation for Kids, which is one of two charities for the tournament along with the University Hospital's newborn intensive care unit.
On Tuesday afternoon, 10 senior pros will compete in the Gillette Tour Challenge, which is worth $20,000. On Wednesday and Thursday, the pros will compete in pro-ams prior to the 54-hole tournament.
Besides the golf, several other events are being held in conjunction with the tournament.
- On Wednesday afternoon several senior players will conduct the Park City Mountain Resort Junior Golf Clinic at 3 p.m. for golfers 17 and under.
- On Friday Smith's Food & Drug Center will host the Smith's and Tony's Pizza Putting Challenge at 8 a.m at the Smith's on 33rd South and 3100 East. Several prizes will be awarded to the top putters.
- Friday evening, the Utah Symphony will perform at Deer Valley at 7:30 p.m. in a western-themed concert that will benefit the tournament's two charities.
