Salt Lake County prosecutors have charged a Sugar House man in connection with the killing of his Great Dane, Kally, on Aug. 11, 1996.
The man, 33, killed the puppy after she refused to obey a command, prosecutors allege. A man living with the defendant at the time says he heard the man kill the dog.The roommate heard the man order the dog to come, he said. When the dog refused, the man said, "Kally, come or I will get rid of you," according to the charges filed in 3rd District Court Tuesday.
The witness then heard two thuds and a squeal. The roommate opened the door and saw the man standing next to the dead dog in the driveway of a house in the 1700 East block of Zenith Avenue (2900 South).
Prosecutors believed the witness and charged the man with aggravated cruelty to an animal, a class A misdemeanor. If found guilty, he faces up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
