A documented gang member was in fair condition Wednesday night after a gunman shot him in the leg from a car, police said.

The victim, 19, was walking south on 300 East near 2500 South when the assailant fired three shots from a sedan about 8 p.m. One of the bullets hit him in the left leg, South Salt Lake Police Capt. Beau Babka said. The victim apparently jumped into some bushes and hid - fearing the gunman might return for another shot.

"He wobbled across the street and hid in some bushes," Babka said. "We're not sure if the car went back."

He eventually walked down the street and called for help from a house, Babka said. Paramedics transported the South Salt Lake resident to Columbia-St. Mark's Hospital, where he remained in fair condition.

Officers believe the gunman fired from a 1970s Lincoln four-door sedan, Babka said. Police did not find the green car Wednesday.

Police have the victim documented as a gang member, Babka said. Investigators believe the shooting was gang-related.
