Nobel Prize-winning author Wole Soyinka isn't ready to end his self-imposed exile from his homeland, even though Nigerian authorities have dropped treason charges against him.
Soyinka was charged with treason in March 1997. Authorities under former dictator Sani Abacha said he and 14 others were behind a series of bombings.Soyinka, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1986, fled to the United States in 1995, fearing he was about to be arrested.
Since Abacha's death in June, military ruler Abdulsalami Abubakar has freed hundreds of political prisoners, scheduled elections and promised a return to civilian rule. Abubakar dropped the charges against the 15 people, saying it was an effort to reconcile.
Soyinka, who teaches at Emory University, said in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that "the right thing has been done."
But, he said, he won't return home until a security decree allowing people to be arrested without a charge is revoked.
