A veteran actor and teacher is blazing the trail for Southern Utah University's newly created college of performing and visual arts.

Charles L. Metten, who has been working as artistic director of Promised Valley Productions in Salt Lake City after retiring as professor of theatre and film at Brigham Young University, is serving as acting dean of the new college.A search for a permanent dean to replace Metten is currently under way.

Metten's 35-year career at BYU included several administrative assignments. He served nearly six years as a department chairman, most of that time over the department of theatre and cinematic arts.

The acting dean has taken numerous film and television roles, including appearances in many episodes of "Touched by an Angel" and "Promised Land."
