A hospital has fired two nurses and suspended two other workers after a new mother was awakened and given the wrong baby to nurse.

One of the nurses fired for the Aug. 17 mistake was a manager who had worked at Lowell General Hospital for about five years, according to the Sun of Lowell."Regrettably, this incident did occur, and we're sorry for it," said Robert Donovan, the hospital's president.

The hospital said it offered counseling and testing to both families involved. HIV and other viruses can be contracted through transmission of bodily fluids such as breast milk.

The other fired employee was a staff nurse who had worked at the hospital for less than six months. A nurse's aide and another registered nurse were suspended for two weeks without pay. None of the workers were identified.
