Laurel Heath Young was selected Tuesday to fill the Precinct 6 vacancy on the Salt Lake City Board of Education.
Two-term board member Diane Barlow, re-elected last November, resigned to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Independence, Mo., with her husband."I'm excited to serve the precinct. I know I have big shoes to fill," Young said Wednesday.
Young, a mother of four, is a part-time nurse and brings an array of civic service to the board, including PTSA president at East High School, PTA health and safety commissioner at Bonneville Elementary, and membership on the Women's State Legislative Council.
Young says she wants to make sure the community is involved in school board decisions.
"I think the district and all public education in the United States needs to work toward educating every student to be prepared for the 21st century because changes are coming very rapidly," she said.
Young will fill in the remainder of Barlow's term through Dec. 31, 2000, and be sworn in Feb. 2. She was among eight candidates interviewed for the school board position.
