WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Four Cougars scored in double figures to earn BYU a 75-54 win over Hawaii Thursday in Provo.Amanda Covington, Lori Cuff, Jill Adams and Cady Williams combined for 52 of BYU's points to improve their team's record to 8-6 on the season, 2-0 in the WAC.
The Cougars shot 6 of 13 from behind the three-point arc in the first half, including three three-pointers from Covington and two from Williams, to give BYU a strong start and a 35-28 halftime lead.
BYU forward Cady Williams was the top Cougar scorer with 16 points, followed by Jill Adams with 14. Lori Cuff and Amanda Covington scored 12 and 10 points respectively. Hawaii's Raylene Howard led all scorers with 17 points.
The Cougars play San Diego State Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Marriott Center in Provo. The game will be broadcast on KSL radio (1160 AM).
WOMEN'S TENNIS: The BYU Women's Tennis team kicks off its 1999 season this weekend by competing in the North Shore Tennis Classic hosted in Laie, Hawaii.
The Cougars play their first matches Friday against the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders. They will take on Fresno State Friday and will then get a two-day break before finishing the tournament on Monday with matches against the University of Michigan.
Utah
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Utah rebounded from cold shooting in back-to-back losses and shot 60 percent from the field to defeat San Diego State, 74-60, on Thursday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. It was Utah's first win in Western Athletic Conference play.
Playing without their leading scorer Erin Gibbons, who is out indefinitely with a pulled groin, the Utes used a balanced offensive attack. Three Utes scored in double figures with Lori Red' 19-point performance leading the way. Red shot 7-for-11 from the field and had a 3-for-4 night from three-point range. Red also pulled down four boards and had two assists and two steals in 31 minutes.
Utah hosts Hawaii, a 75-54 loser at BYU on Thursday night, Sunday at noon in the Huntsman Center.
Utah State
TRACK & FIELD: Utah State will open its 1999 indoor track and field season on Saturday at the Snake River Open in Pocatello, Idaho. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. on the Idaho State campus.
Teams scheduled to compete are BYU, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Southern Utah, Weber State and Utah State.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Utah State's women's tennis team will open its spring schedule with a very early season match at defending Big West Champion Boise State on Saturday.
The Aggies competed in two fall tournaments last semester and will play the first of 17 scheduled dual matches at Boise at 10 a.m.
Southern Utah
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Southern Utah's road woes continue as the Thunderbirds drop their fourth-straight game in the Mid-Continent Conference at Western Illinois 64-51, Thursday night in Macomb.
SUU's record evens at 8-8, 1-4 in Mid-Con play, while Western Illinois improves to 4-11, 3-2 in conference action. SUU travels to Chicago, Ill., to face Chicago State Saturday at 1:30 p.m. (CST).
UVSC
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Lori Richards has announced her retirement from coaching after 18 years at the helm of a highly successful Wolverine program.
Richards will be going out while she's on top. She was recently named the National Junior College Coach of the Year, after leading her club to a 46-9 record. The Wolverines were ranked as high as third in the nation this past season. Their 46 wins were the most ever for a UVSC team.
Richards logged 482 wins during her career, with an impressive .743 winning percentage. In 18 years, she won 10 conference titles and had a 145-33 league record, for a robust .815 winning percentage. She won four region titles, and finished as high as third in the nation at the NJCAA nationals.
