E. J. Steve Beienburg passed away December 7, 1998, in Phoenix, Arizona.
He was born Edwin Joseph Beienburg on December 12, 1920, to Stephen J. and Anna Kwiek Beienburg in Seattle, Washington. "Little Steve" was raised in Seattle, grew up helping at his parents' cafe on the pier, attended schools in Seattle and graduated from Lincoln High in 1938. He furthered his education the University of Washington and worked for Boeing Aircraft before serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Following his father's death, he legally added "Steve" to his name.Steve took employment following the war with Philco and then in 1951, the Sperry Gyroscope Company as an electronics engineer. He met his future wife, Helen Eula McCallum, in Texas and they were later married on April 30, 1955 in Los Angeles, California. Following short assignments in Riverside, California; Omaha, Nebraska; and Great Neck, New York, they were transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah in July 1957 where they built a beautiful home and raised three happy daughters.
Steve retired in September 1981 after 30 years with Sperry Univac or Unisys as it is now called. He saw the electronics industry progress from tubes to microchips with millions of uses and was on the forefront of technology. From his travels around the world, his work, and life experiences, he had a vast knowledge and could fix and do just about anything he wanted. Since his retirement, he has been a delivery man and repaired furniture at his wife's store, The Baby Boutique, enjoyed fishing, his stamp collection, helped his girls with their homes, and has probably read just about every book printed worthy of reading.
Steve is survived by his wife, Helen, Phoenix Arizona; daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and DeMont Grandy, Codeville, WY; and Stephanie and Jeffrey Smith, Phoenix, Arizona; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda; his parents; and a sister.
Steve was a hard worker who valued honesty and integrity and his family. There were many who sought his guidance and friendship, especially his family.
Memorial services will be held January 23, 1999 at 1 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.
