VINELAND, N.J. (AP) -- Thirteen-year-old Cindy Volpe got an early driving lesson when her 79-year-old bus driver passed out behind the wheel.
Driver Felice Leone clutched his chest and fainted while heading to St. Francis of Assisi school. With his foot still on the gas pedal, the bus began to swerve toward oncoming traffic.Volpe said she went to check on Leone because he was not responding to her question about a lost book bag. "I thought he was playing or joking," she said of the Friday incident. "He grabbed his chest."
Cindy then grabbed for the steering wheel and forced the bus onto the curb. It stopped before it hit a telephone pole.
Leone, who was diagnosed with a heart condition a few years ago, was treated at a local hospital and released.
