A former Provo School District teacher has filed a federal lawsuit saying religious discrimination played a part in his termination.

Charles M. Larson, who taught history and social studies at Independence High School beginning in 1991, said his troubles with district officials began after he wrote a book called "By His Own Hand Upon Papyrus" in 1992. The book is a scholarly interpretation of the Book of Abraham, which is part of a collection of writings from the Pearl of Great Price, an LDS Church scripture. The lawsuit, which was filed with the backing of the American Civil Liberties Union, says Larson's teaching hours were cut and that he was eventually fired in 1993, ostensibly because of a reduction in force.

However, Larson contends that was a pretext for the job action that was in fact caused by district officials disagreeing with his "orthodox Christian" views.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for violation of freedom of religion, freedom of speech and equal protection.
