Ice skatingEUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Skating cleanly but conservatively, Russia's Maria Butyrskaya defended her European Figure Skating title Saturday in Prague, Czech Republic.

The title gave the Russians sweep of all four events for the third consecutive year. And in an achievement unprecedented in the championship's 69-year-history, all the men's and women's medals go to the same.

WORLD CUP: Charlie Cosnier of France won the gold medal in the giant slalom at a World Cup snowboarding event Saturday in Mont-Ste-Anne, Quebec, beating out American Ian Price for first place.

Cosnier finished in a combined time of 2 hours, 14.05 seconds, while Price won silver in 2:14.91.

In the women's event, Utah's Sondra Van Ert of the U.S. won gold while Austria's Claudia Riegler took silver and Margerita Parini of Italy won the bronze.
