WEST VALLEY CITY -- Police here are looking for several men who allegedly shot and critically wounded a 34-year-old man at an apartment complex Sunday night.
The man had just finished eating dinner with his girlfriend at his Sommerset Village apartment, 3810 W. Redwood Road, at 8:30 p.m. when he was shot once in the neck, West Valley City Police Lt. Charles Illsley said. The man, who had arrived in the United States from Mexico just 15 days ago, was outside the apartment talking on a cellular phone when the shooting occurred, Illsley said.
Police have not released the man's name because they are unsure if they know his correct identity, West Valley Police Lt. Lance Calls said.
Witnesses said they saw two men leave the scene immediately after the shooting and they got into a waiting car.
Police are searching for three possible vehicles -- a green and gold Mustang-like sports car and a teal or black four-door car.
The man was taken by helicopter to LDS Hospital, where he remained in critical condition Monday. No one else was injured, although police said Sunday it was possible that more than one shot was fired.
Police were hoping interviews with witnesses would help determine if the men with the gun and the victim knew each other, or if the shooting may have been drug- or gang-related, Illsley said.
The gunmen are believed to be in their late teens or early 20s.
