One of the signs of good government is that it is inexpensive and there is little to do. One of the signs of evil, corrupt oligarchies is that it is very expensive and there is much to do. Utah state government is one of the most evil. When I departed in 1991, we had just hit a $1 billion budget. Now we are at $6 billion and climbing rapidly. And this with Republicans.
Each politician seems to try to outspend his opponent and the previous administration. With what? Other individuals' property, taken at gunpoint. You think not about the gun? Don't pay this legalized plunder, be it in the form of fees, taxes or fines. And they use this loot to bribe the public. The people, individually and collectively, are corrupted.
During the great tax-cut debate in 1988, it was revealed that one in six Utahns received some sort of government check. Does any one think they will ever bite the hand that feeds it?
They would die first. That is their god, their religion, their ideology.
It was not revealed how many industries and individuals profit by government. You know; doctors, lawyers, unions, insurance, utility and real estate companies, students, the media. Deedee Corradini, Mike Leavitt and the SLOC would be able to say how many are on the take. Do you think those individuals would ever bite that generous hand? They would even contribute big bucks to help their friends out of financial difficulties.
If I took money for my special interest, I would go to jail. So where does government get the authority to provide for and support these special interests? They assume it. Usurp it. Take it. Is this oligarchy any different from socialism, fascism, feudalism or communism? Not one jot or tittle. The populace are bribed with a share-the-wealth propaganda and are too obtuse, corrupt or indolent to stop it.Daniel L. Cooper
