In response to the piece by Sgt. Terry Thompson, Oct. 31, where he alludes twice to our "God-given right" to bear arms, he did not mention, biblically, men bearing arms as defined by God. We trust the government to professionally train soldiers and police to protect us from foreign and domestic threats. Sergeant Thompson has been salaried to serve as protector for 12 years, as have I for 30 years, by the taxpayers who expect no less.
Walking into church on Sunday packing a sidearm would be more threatening to parishioners than peacemaking and is a blatant display of paranoia for the gun toter.Though Americans kill more of each other than the citizens in any other civilized society on earth, we do not need to encourage the proliferation of guns. Sergeant Thompson is wrong to assume that the majority of peace officers want an armed citizenry. Certainly, this one doesn't.
