Almost every year, the issues of book censorship and what books should be banned arise. The censoring of books is a very sensitive issue because of the fine line between "good" and "bad" literature. What is appropriate for one individual might not be appropriate for another because of his or her values and ethics.

I believe that books should not be banned because everyone should have the choice to read or not to read a particular book. However, I do believe in book censorship within the public school. In a public high school setting, where English is a four-year requirement for graduation, students should have a voice in what novels and plays they study. No students should be forced to read a novel or play that they believe is in conflict with their moral values. However, for the general public, there should not be book censorship because by censoring books we limit someone's freedom of speech. Rather than banning books, readers should be warned of any obscene content within the book. This way, the reader is aware of anything they may find objectionable within a book, authors are able to exercise their freedom of speech without being censored, and the choice to read any book is left to the individual.
