Bush receives award for '90 Germany aid

Former president George Bush was awarded the Franz-Josef Strauss Prize on Saturday for his role in talks leading to reunification of East and West Germany in 1990.

Bush, who took part in 10th anniversary celebrations of the opening of the Berlin Wall, was joined by former Chancellor Helmut Kohl for the presentation ceremony.

Kohl praised the 75-year-old Bush as a "reliable friend," to whom it was clear from the beginning "that the joint will of the Germans for unity and freedom had priority over geopolitical considerations of European balance of power."

Without Bush's vigorous support, unification would not have so quickly become reality, Kohl said.

The prize is named after Bavaria's former governor, who died in 1988.
