Jarvik-7 implanter resigns from post

Dr. William DeVries, who performed the first-ever artificial heart implant in a human, has reportedly resigned from Hardin Memorial Hospital in Louisville, Ky.The News-Enterprise, the Elizabethtown newspaper, said DeVries cited medical reasons for stepping down.

Just before Christmas 1982, a team of surgeons at University of Utah Hospital, led by DeVries, implanted the Jarvik-7 plastic pump in Barney Clark, a dentist from Washington state who lived 112 days on the device.

DeVries believed more implants were warranted, but was frustrated by the red tape he encountered with both the university and the federal government. He accepted a position in a private heart institute in Kentucky, where he performed other artificial heart implants. In 1997, he created the open-heart surgery program at Hardin Memorial Hospital.

Panel OKs opening of Atkinson report

WEST JORDAN -- The Utah Records Commission ruled last week that an investigative report should be released against the former assistant city manager Penny Atkinson.

Atkinson, who resigned recently, has 30 days to appeal.

The City Council in October agreed to make reports public of an investigation into whether Atkinson pressured an auto dealer for a contribution to a women's shelter. The investigation was prompted by a grievance filed by ex-fleet manager Gordon Ryan.

Atkinson appealed the decision through her attorney, who contended the report should be classified private because the City Council found the grievance to have no merit.

Ryan was fired last week for allegedly conducting an illegal meeting. Earlier in the year he was disciplined for using a city computer to write novels.
