Man escapes after break-in and sex assault of 2 girls
KEARNS -- Police are searching for a man who broke into a Kearns home Sunday and sexually assaulted two young children.
Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy Peggy Faulkner said a man entered a bedroom at 2 a.m. where a 5-year-old girl was sleeping.
The girl's mother heard a noise and found a man in her daughter's room and the girl undressed.
Another family member ran outside and flagged down a Neighborhood Watch member who called the police.
When they went back into the house they found another child, a 3-year-old girl, missing. They heard her crying in the back yard, where they saw the man jump the fence, Faulkner said.
Evidence indicates both girls were sexually assaulted, Faulkner said.
Fire sends smoke across I-15, destroys abandoned home
MURRAY -- An abandoned house burned to the ground Sunday just west of I-15 at about 4900 South, near the Fun Dome.
About a quarter acre of brush around the building also burned.
The 3 p.m. blaze caused a considerable amount of black smoke that drifted in the direction of the freeway. That was the Murray Fire Department's biggest concern, Capt. Brad Freeman said, but the fire was under control within 10 minutes and the freeway remained open.
Arson is suspected as the cause. No one was injured.
