KAYSVILLE - George Gibbs Wright Smith, age 94, passed away at his home, Friday, November 12, 1999.

He was born November 18, 1904, in Logan, Utah, a son of Orson Gurney and Mary Ellen Wright Smith. He attended Logan City schools, and graduated from Jefferson High School in Los Angeles.He graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. At USU, he affiliated with Phi Kappa Iota fraternity. He earned a Doctor of Dentistry degree from the University of Southern California, and was elected to Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity upon graduation. He practiced dentistry in Oakland, California, where he was active in dental organizations, serving on the board and as president (1943) of the Alameda County Dental Society, and as councilor to the California Dental Association. He served as a Captain in the Army Dental Corps in Sacramento and at McCornick General Hospital in Pasadena, California.

He married Iola Heiselt in Oakland in 1935. They were later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple. Iola died February 1, 1991.

In 1948, he moved to Kaysville, where he practiced dentistry at 69 East 1st North for over 40 years, well into his eighties, and became universally known as "Doc" Smith. He served on the board of the Salt Lake District Dental Society and later as president. He was a delegate to the American Dental Society. A life member of the Utah and American Dental societies, he was also a member of the honorary Pierre Fouchard Academy.

He served on the Kaysville City Council and he was an active Rotarian for fifty years, serving as President of the Kaysville Club and becoming a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He was a charter member of Oakridge Country Club, where he was a "hole-in-one" ardent golfer until his 94th year. He also loved fishing, gardening, nurturing his neighbors and family.

Active in the LDS Church, he served in the San Francisco Stake M.I.A. presidency and in Kaysville served as Sunday School Superintendent and later councilor in the stake Sunday School presidency. He was a high priest in the Kaysville First Ward.

Survivors include two children, Gibbs Morgan (Catherine) Smith, and ShruDeLi Smith (Ray W.) Ownbey; and two grandchildren, Jordan Alexis Smith and Micah Gibbs Ownbey. "Doc" always had a twinkle in his eye, a sense of humor and was an example to all who knew him of how to live life.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 1999 in the Kaysville LDS Tabernacle, 198 West Center Street, with Bishop Wayne Huber officiating. Friends and family may call Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the family home, 42 West Center Street and Thursday at the Tabernacle from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Funeral directors, Lindquist's Kaysville Mortuary. Interment in Kaysville City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Utah State University c/o the Davis County Botanical Garden.
