7 Utahns will be honored on National Philanthropy Day

Jon M. Huntsman Sr. will be among those honored Wednesday as Utah celebrates National Philanthropy Day for the first time.The Utah Nonprofits Association and the Utah Society of Fundraisers are co-sponsoring the event recognizing people who give generously to the community and keep the American tradition of philanthropy alive. The theme for the celebration is "Giving and Sharing -- A Community Tradition."

Huntsman will be named Philanthropist of the Year at a luncheon Nov. 17 at Rice-Eccles Stadium at the University of Utah. The prominent Salt Lake businessman is involved in myriad care-giving endeavors in Utah and abroad. He most recently dedicated the $100 million Huntsman Cancer Institute. The institute's mission is to help people of all walks of life.

"Our goal is that those who come here feeling helpless under the heavy burden of cancer will leave feeling uplifted," Huntsman said.

Six others also will receive awards:

Foundation of the Year -- George S. & Delores Dore Eccles Foundation.

Corporation of the Year -- KSL television and radio.

Norman Matheson Outstanding Volunteer Award -- Lila B. Bjorklund.

Volunteer of the Year -- Ryan Tripp.

Spirit of Philanthropy -- Joseph Rosenblatt.

Service Organization of the Year -- Judge Memorial High School.

National Philanthropy Day was established under the direction of President Reagan in 1986. The annual celebration is an opportunity to remember and pay tribute to individuals, organizations, businesses and foundations that have made a difference in people's lives and communities. This is the first year Utah has joined other states in observing the day.

2 bird experts will speak at Audobon meeting tonight

Two Utahns with expertise on birds will speak at an Audubon meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Sugarhouse Garden Center, 1650 E. 2100 South.

Mark Stackhouse and David Wheeler, current record holders for Utah in counting 200 species of birds, will review the history of Birding Big Day and their own experiences in tracking down birds.

The meeting is free to the public. Call the Audubon hotline, 263-1399, for information on other events.

Red Cross is offering classes on standard first aid and CPR

The Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter of the American Red Cross will offer daylong first aid courses to the public on Nov. 17, 18 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The 6 1/2 hour course will be taught at the chapter office, 465 S. 400 East in Salt Lake City, and will cover adult CPR and standard first aid procedures.

Cost is $30. To register, call 323-7014.

Utah's Freedom Foundation to honor students, groups

The Utah Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge will honor a number of Utahns, schools, a school district and 13 students during a luncheon Wednesday, Nov. 17, at noon in the Little America Hotel.

Each year the national organization selects individuals from across the country who have worked to promote an understanding of responsible citizenship and its relationship to a free society.

Wednesday, George Washington Medals of Honor will be presented to: Gareth Seastrand, SCERA (Sharon's Cultural, Educational, Recreational Association) History Museum; Maj. Gen. James. M. Miller, Utah National Guard; Richard D. Alsop, Bonneville Communications; Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership of Utah, Dave Olpin; Michele Mobley, former Miss Utah; Richfield High School and Principal Teresa Robinson; Morgan High School and Deona Green, a teacher; and Sego Lily Elementary School and Principal Glenn Martin. Clint Frohm, music curriculum specialist for Granite School District, will accept a plaque for the district.

Student honorees, who will be presented George Washington Medals of Honor for giving outstanding speeches or for writing essays, are: Mitchell Warner, Provo; Rachel Swim and Megan Gelter, both of Orem; Marilee Randall, Provo; Angela Newman, Payson; Katie Richter, Bountiful; Karen Acree, Salt Lake City; Heidi Thompson, Henrieville, Garfield County; Steven Wheelwright, Ogden; Jenny Weaver, Smithfield; Joshua Patrick Wilson, Richfield; Michael Maughn, Salt Lake City; and Jessica L. Switzer, Clearfield.

The major goal of the Freedoms Foundation, established in 1949, is to promote patriotism and freedom in schools and communities throughout the country.
